Judge orders release of files on Cyril Smith

"A JUDGE has ordered the release of files on paedophile politician Cyril Smith after a court battle by the Daily Star Sunday. The former MP died in 2010 before it emerged he was a child abuser."

"The files, which we asked for in November 2012 under Freedom of Information laws, reveal how Smith escaped charges in 1998 and 1999."

"Service (CPS) twice refused our request for them and the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) later backed its stance. We took the case to a tribunal which ruled the ICO's decision was "not in accordance with the law".

"Judge Chris Hughes said the papers were "significant in the way they illuminate the character and actions of a public figure"...

"It is our second victory over files held on Smith. Earlier this year we won the release of a document proving Liberal leader David Steel nominated Smith for a knighthood in 1988."

"Nine years earlier he had been told of abuse allegations. He confronted Smith, who said police had shut their file."
