Operation Grange continues and many ask: why ?

"The Home Office has agreed to keep funding the hunt for missing Madeleine McCann for another year."

"An application had been made by the Metropolitan Police Service for a further £300,000 to keep the investigation going until the end of March 2020."

"Today the Home Office confirmed the investigation would get `similar` funding to last financial year, when it got £300,000."

"The British police investigation, called Operation Grange, has cost £11.75 million since it began in 2013."

McCann case given more funds

"Can I really be the only person who is wondering why the Home Office has given the Metropolitan Police yet more taxpayers’ money to investigate the disappearance of Madeleine McCann? "

"The disappearance of any child is a tragedy. That’s a given."

"But what the hell is going on here?"

"The police have so far been given over £12 million of taxpayers’ hard-earned money and what have they got to show for it?"

"That isn’t a rhetorical question."

"It’s a real question."

"What exactly have they done with our money? What have they achieved? Why do they think they can usefully spend yet more of our money?"

...
.

"And how and why have so many senior politicians become involved in the McCann case?"

"Do you know how to get through to the Prime Minister’s office?"

"No, nor me."

"If your child was missing would ringing the Prime Minister or the Chancellor of the Exchequer be one of your first priorities?"

"The McCanns seem to have managed to get hold of the Prime Minister, the Chancellor and the Pope."

"What the hell is going on here?"

Madeleine - why the cover up ?

"The first film examines the movements of the initial suspect in the case, Robert Murat, both immediately before and after Madeleine was reported missing and attempts to shed light on whether he played a role in the cover up of Madeleine’s alleged death.

Kate and Gerry lose libel appeal in Portugal

"The parents of Madeleine McCann have lost their libel appeal over ex police chief Goncalo Amaral’s book which claimed they covered up their daughter’s death. The judgement came from Portugal’s highest court."

"The hearing took place in private at Portugal’s Supreme Court. The hearing followed an earlier court hearing last year which overturned the McCann’s initial libel win in 2015."

"Officially no public decision will be made until later on in the week, but a source according to the Daily Mail newspaper has said the decision did not go the way of the McCanns."

"The decision is final in Portugal but the McCann’s can take the fight to the European Court of Human Rights if they want to overturn the decision."

The McCanns have threatened to sue anybody who publishes the book `The truth of the lie` in the UK.

An English translation is available online. It is a well measured and professional piece of work as you would expect from a man just doing his job whose account happens to agree with the official Portuguese version.

Statement analysis

When Kate recounts the moment she checks on the children and discovers Madeleine is missing she spends most her time talking about the angle of the door, the whooshing of curtains and the shutters being up. She has nothing to say about Madeleine.

It is very unusual for the mother of a missing child to avoid talking about her child at such a crucial point in the story. Statement analysis is as much about the omissions as it is about the spoken word.

Operation Grange to be shelved

"Operation Grange was costing more and more of taxpayers money while other areas face budget cuts."

"British police hunting for missing Madeleine McCann have made the decision to stop all forensic work."

"The Sunday Mirror can reveal the final scientific tests on the case were completed three months ago as part of Scotland Yard’s £12million inquiry."

"Operation Grange was launched by ex-PM David Cameron five years ago to find the doctors’ daughter, who vanished, aged three, during a holiday to Portugal in 2007."

"But it is expected to be shelved in the autumn amid concerns about its spiralling cost while other areas of policing face budget cuts."

Sir Clement Freud exposed as a paedophile

"Sir Clement Freud, the former broadcaster and politician, was exposed on Tuesday night as a paedophile who sexually abused girls as young as 10 for decades."

"Freud, who died in 2009, spent years abusing a girl who he brought up as a daughter, and violently raped a teenager while he was an MP."
"His widow, Lady Freud, has apologised to his victims, saying she is `shocked, deeply saddened and profoundly sorry` for what her husband of 58 years did to them."

"Detectives investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have been alerted to the fact that Freud had a villa in Praia da Luz, Portugal, the resort where the three-year-old went missing in 2007."

"He befriended the McCanns in the weeks after their daughter went missing, entertaining them at his house on two occasions and keeping in contact by phone and email."

"The McCanns are said to be `horrified` by the discovery that Freud was a paedophile."

"His family, who include the PR executive Matthew Freud, have said that Freud was not in Portugal at the time of Madeleines disappearance and that they have not been contacted by police."

Note also that Matthew Freud was married to Elisabeth Murdoch, daughter of Rupert Murdoch and good friend of Rebekah Brooks. It was Brooks who put pressure on David Cameron to set up Operation Grange.

Goncalo Amaral wins appeal

"THE EX-police chief who claimed `the McCanns covered up Maddie's death by faking her disappearance` has announced he is planning to sue the couple for compensation in a new blow for the couple."

"Goncalo Amaral yesterday won an appeal against paying the Brit parents 500,000 euros (£430,000), after a year-long battle against their libel win over his explosive book 'Maddy,The Truth of the Lie'. "

"The former detective, who worked on the four-year-old's disappearance case in the opening days, claimed the McCanns `covered up Maddie's death by faking her disappearance` in the book..."

"Gerry and Kate previously won a libel case against the claims, but were heartbroken last night after this was overturned by three judges in an appeal."

"The parents had planned to put the £430,000 into their Find Maddie fund."

"Amaral's lawyer yesterday announced after the libel U-turn he would sue the McCanns for damages, claiming the couple’s long-running court fight had cost his client money and harmed his reputation."

Gerry McCann labelled a hypocrite

"The father of missing Madeleine McCann has been labelled a hypocrite after he appeared on breakfast TV to criticise the government for dragging its heels over press reforms."

"Gerry McCann, whose daughter Madeleine vanished from a holiday apartment in Portugal in 2007, was quizzed on BBC breakfast earlier today after he signed his name on a letter to the Prime Minister posing questions about the Leveson inquiry."

"The letter, which is also signed by other victims of press intrusion, including Christoper Jefferies, who was wrongly accused of murder, criticises the government for failing to enact promises it made over press reform. "

"The open letter, published in the Guardian, read: `We believe that it is not just us whom you are at risk of betraying, but Parliament, the public at large and future victims of a press industry which was condemned by Leveson for wreaking havoc in the lives of innocent people'."

" `If your promises are not kept, history tells us that newspapers will wreak havoc again.` "

"Mr McCann told the programme: `The Prime Minister promised us that the victims would remain at the centre of the Leveson reforms and we feel that our views have been pushed aside.` "

"However, Mr McCann was roundly slammed on Twitter for `hypocrisy` by senior media commentators as he and his wife Kate have been accused of courting media coverage in the past."

"The McCanns reportedly paid PR agency Bell Pottinger £500,000 to keep the case in the media spotlight."

When does leaving a child mean neglect ?

"Tim Haines was arrested when he left his young daughter in his car outside a chemist."

"Haines said `I left her for just five minutes to buy a bottle of calpol`."

"Police arrested Haines at his house two weeks after they saw his child alone in the car. He was convicted of child neglect but cleared on appeal. He said `I was very unhappy that I'd been convicted of an offence of child abuse for something so every day`. "

"In law, there's no minimum age a child can be left on their own, but a parent can be prosecuted if they're subjected to unnecessary suffering or injury to health."

"More than five hundred people in England and Wales have been arrested for neglect, in the twelve months to April last year. They're accused of leaving their child or children at home alone and the BBC found that the youngest child involved was just six weeks old but the oldest was fifteen."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03mmjth

Other parents who were known to have seriously neglected their children, five nights in a row  - albeit in a holiday resort abroad - get the support of the whole British establishment and never find themselves scrutinised by social services as to their suitability to raise their two remaining children.  (Two out of three seems to be good enough for them.) You have to ask: why are Madeleine McCann`s parents presumed innocent, when so many parents are found guilty for lesser offences, if offences they be ?

The BBC revelation moment that fizzled out

For those who are not up to speed with the Madeleine McCann case, the three year old girl who went missing in Portugal, a BBC Crimewatch programme in 2013 - sticking to the abduction theory - blew the McCann story wide apart. The original abduction theory had rested on Jane Tanner`s testimony that she had seen the `abductor` crossing the road in front of her.

No she hadn`t - because the innocent father carrying his child from the creche at that particular time and in that particular place had been traced and his testimony had been corroborated.

In the programme Kate and Gerry McCann can be seen in the Crimewatch studio like two frozen rabbits caught in the headlights.

Why?  Since their friend Jane Tanner had not seen the abductor, the whole story that the McCann`s and the Tapas seven had built around this evidence had fallen to pieces.

When I watched the BBC programme and their dramatisation of Gerry visiting his children in the apartment, I noticed that the door was hinged on the wrong side of the door frame and therefore opened in the wrong direction. (I mean, why would you design a door to swing only 90 degrees to hit the wall) I was not the only person who noticed that, and it does not tally with the evidence from the Portuguese police.

You see, the direction in which the door swings determines what the witness can see and is absolutely crucial in determining the validity of witness testimony. No small matter.

Did the BBC just make a simple mistake? You bet they didn`t.

Whatever the BBC and Redwood were up to - and the UK taxpayers have had to pay for - it has had nothing to do with solving a crime.

All of this is in preparation to my introduction to the recent post from Blackwood which is excellent, and begins:
Impossible Consistency
Those who so unwisely put their names to the written statement of events provided to the Portuguese police committed themselves without reservation to the existence of a single abductor seen fleeing with a child in his arms.
http://blacksmithbureau.blogspot.co.uk/

I would say that the Government is committed  to the view that these parents are innocent, no matter what the evidence shows.

And I ask why ?

Apology for PJ policeman

Posted in Portugal Record 7.12 2015

"After a written campaign that involved countless emails, letters and negotiations, a man who himself has been the target of legal action by the parents of Madeleine McCann succeeded in getting an apology from the Daily Express newspaper."

"Written at the bottom of page 21 in today’s edition is a box, headed ‘Amplification and Clarification, Gonçalo Amaral - Correction’. Amaral had NOT lied in court, the paper conceded."

"It was not a huge victory, Tony Bennett writes on the Jill Havern Forum, but it has publicly corrected an error that saw the former PJ policeman `publicly accused` of having lied about a death cover-up claim. The full text of the Express correction was as follows: `On the 29th April 2015 we published a headline on the front page which said `Maddy detective did lie about death cover-up claim`. We would like to make it clear that there was no determination by the Portuguese court that Mr Amaral lied. In fact the court ruled that Mr Amaral had breached the McCann’s right to reputation and ordered him to pay damages to them`. "

"Those damages are currently being appealed by Mr Amaral, who almost certainly had no knowledge of Tony Bennett’s efforts to clear the tabloid’s slur."

"Was it worth it? Mr Bennett questions in today’s write-up: `He did not lie. I am personally content that I have not wasted my time and effort.`"

Madeleine McCann`s parents battle on...

Here`s a very one sided article from the Daily Star:

"INTERNET trolls are backing a court challenge to Madeleine McCann’s parents."

"They could help to strip the couple of £357,000 they hope to use to find her." [What have the McCanns done with the millions donated by the public - to find Madeleine - other than sue people?]

"Ex-police chief Goncalo Amaral, 56, has been flooded with nearly £50,000 in public donations since he lost a libel hearing against Kate and Gerry McCann six months ago."

[According to the McCanns he has no right to defend himself.  He should lie down and deliver up the £357,000.]

http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/latest-news/468332/McCann-fury-new-libel-cop-case-Madeleine-internet-trolls

[How much money will ever be enough ?]

"The total cost of the investigation in to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann (Operation Grange), up until end of June 2015, is £10.1m. The Home Office has budgeted £2m for the investigation in 2015/16. The Home Office funds this work from the Special Grant budget. The level of funding provided to the Metropolitan Police in relation to this investigation is reviewed regularly and will continue to be monitored." – Lord Bates, Home Office Minister.

Now this from the Mirror:

Kerry Needham

"Ben Needham's mum has said she is "shocked and hurt" after Madeleine McCann's parents have closed down a Twitter account after "toxic" abuse by supporters of missing Ben's family."

"Missing boy Ben Needham, disappeared in Kos, Greece in 1991..."

"`I have never criticised the McCann family. I have only every criticised the authorities for the way the two cases have been handled so differently.`"

"Trouble erupted with the Twitter accounts when the official ‘@findmadeleine’ Twitter feed blocked the ‘@FindBenNeedham’ account at the weekend."

"Kate McCann and her husband Gerry McCann have made the decision to shut the Twitter feed. The Greek account @findbengreek was also blocked."

"A few hours later both accounts were unblocked after an outcry but now the Madeleine feed has been closed down."

Gonçalo Amaral files appeal

"Following a huge crowd-funding drive that has raised over £29,000 from well-wishers almost exclusively from the UK, former police inspector Gonçalo Amaral has today filed his appeal against the €500,000-plus damages awarded against him in a civil case taken out by the parents of Madeleine McCann. The Projecto Justiça Gonçalo Amaral published the news this morning, thanking "each and every one" of the nearly 2000 people who have given money to the British gofundme appeal that has helped take Amaral’s legal fight to its next stage. As the message went out, donations continued apace - with over £390 raised in a matter of hours."

"Several of the day’s donors commented this was "news worth celebrating", but more than one suggested the story is "unlikely to be covered by mainstream media".

"Indeed, by coincidence British media is much more focused today on Madeleine’s mother Kate who is leading a bike ride for a missing people’s charity. Kate McCann has told reporters that she is "really encouraged" by progress being made by police in the eight-year hunt for her daughter."

Interview with Gonçalo Amaral

"For the first time, Gonçalo Amaral speaks about the case that destroyed his career, his family and his health..."My life is gone, I’m only alive due to my heart"

"Condemned to pay 500 thousand euro to the parents of Maddie, the little English three-year-old girl that disappeared in Praia da Luz, in the Algarve, on the 3rd of May of 2007, the former inspector will fight until the last legal instance, because he is "a free man and citizen" with "the right to express opinions".

"What was your reaction when you found out that the verdict from the court was unfavourable to you in the defamation suit that the McCanns filed against you?"

"I found out about the verdict through a friend who called me telling me about the news on the radio. I immediately called my lawyer, but he hadn’t been notified and the verdict was not in the process. It’s sad, but my lawyer could only access the sentence, that afternoon, because a British journalist sent it to him by e-mail. There is no doubt that the couple’s lawyer has good connections at the court. My reaction was one of calm and a wish to read the full contents of the verdict as soon as it was available on the Citius website, which only happened the next day, but with the date of the previous day. Mysteries which the webs of justice weave. "

"Were you surprised?"

"I wasn’t surprised, it was one of the open possibilities, but after the decision about the matter of fact, which was favourable to me, I trusted that the verdict would come in the same direction. "

"Do you think there are errors in the process? Do you feel wronged?"

"Those are not mistakes, but value judgements and understandings that are contrary to mine and to that of many other jurists. As for feeling wronged…What do you think? I can only ask if those who, for more than five nights, left their three children, aged three and two, to their own devices in a house within an unknown space, subjecting them to a thousand dangers, while they were partying with friends – not to mention the amounts of alcohol that was ingested on those occasions -, still has the right to be compensated. They practiced a crime of exposing and abandoning defenceless children and they weren’t even accused of that fact. Looking at our criminal legislation, at the English child protection legislation and at cases that recently happened with British subjects in the Algarve, after drunken nights, all that I can say is that the McCann couple is primarily responsible for their daughter’s disappearance. She only disappeared because they neglected her guard and, as parents, they were obliged to it. It is a fact that they lost their daughter, but that doesn’t give them the right to sue anyone or to be compensated. They can’t escape their guilt, which is enough to rob them of their sleep, to provoke a lack of appetite and even rage, but against themselves and not against someone who only wrote down what happened during the first five months of the investigation, according to what is in the case files. If compensation takes place, all that I can do is warn you: be careful, there’s people who may turn this into a new business! "

"Don’t you feel revolted by this verdict? "

"I don’t feel revolt, but I do not conform to it, I still trust our country’s justice system, for which I have worked for over 25 years, and I still am a free citizen with all my rights. On the other hand, even the question that Maddie’s siblings, then aged two, may someday read my book and become traumatized doesn’t concern me. Those two children were also abandoned for over five nights in a row and surely they will understand that what is written there is the result of a criminal investigation. "

"There is a question that those two children will certainly ask when they grow up but that question will be directed at the parents: why were they abandoned, left to their own devices? Those children are free to think and to conclude that whatever happened to their daughter could have happened to one of them. The parents can only fear that their two children who did not disappear on that tragic night revolt against them...."

"Have you never considered suing the McCanns over the damages that they caused to your family?"

"Each thing in its own time, it won’t be only the McCanns, but their group of friends, and other people and entities that will be sued. There is an illicit action that was indeed performed, the neglect in guarding their children, which caused direct damages to many people, not only to myself, but for example to the Ocean Club workers, who were fired and saw their lives change, many of them unjustly passing from mere employees and heads of family to suspects in a criminal investigation, while they had nothing to do with the matter"

Amaral is to appeal

"The McCanns partially won their libel action against the author and former lead detective Gonçalo Amaral, but the matter is far from over. "

"Amaral intends to appeal. In his first comment on the verdict he said today: "I find that the court’s decision is unfair and questions my right and every Portuguese citizen's right to freedom of expression and of opinion. For that reason, I do not resign myself to the decision and I will appeal it until the very last judicial instance."

"Apart from Amaral’s assertion on the "unfairness" of the court’s decision, there were two remarkable features about the verdict and the way in which it was announced that got little or no mention in the mainstream media coverage."

"The first unusual aspect was the huge sum awarded. It may be normal in the UK, but not here. Amaral was ordered to pay the parents of Madeleine McCann half a million euros in damages, plus interest, currently calculated at €106,000 and rising."

"Kate and Gerry McCann had sought a total of €1.2 million. In addition to €250,000 each, they claimed €500,000 for Madeleine and €100,000 for each of their twins. The judge ruled against the claims on behalf of the children."

"The McCanns successfully claimed that Amaral’s book, Maddie, the Truth of the Lie, caused them great personal distress. The judge did not agree, however, that the book had hindered the search for Madeleine or had caused damages to the twins."

"Should Amaral on appeal get the verdict overturned, or the compensation figure greatly reduced, the McCanns may lodge a counter appeal. The deadline for appeals is 40 days. The legal battle that has been going on for more than five years looks like continuing for some time yet. "

"A defiant Amaral supporter noted that, "a decision from a Portuguese court can only be enforced after all appeals are exhausted. No money will change hands until a final decision is reached by the very last appeals court." With this in mind, other well-wishers are being urged to make donations to a Gonçalo Amaral defence fund. "

"The second oddity was the way in which the announcement of the verdict was handled. The judge’s ruling was not read out in court. It was contained in a 52-page report, which was received by the McCann’s Lisbon lawyer Isabel Duarte who swiftly passed it on to media organisations in Portugal and abroad."

Amaral loses libel case

Goncalo Amaral

"A Portuguese court ruled that disgraced detective Goncalo Amaral, who ran the initial investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine in 2007, should pay libel damages to the couple following the publication of his book The Truth of the Lie."

"Kate and Gerry McCann were accused in the book of covering up missing Madeleine's death, which they said left them "crushed and devastated".

"The court in Lisbon ruled the book had caused hurt to the family, Sky News reported. Kate said the policeman’s claims left her unable to sleep at night and hampered the hunt for Madeleine, who vanished from the family’s Algarve holiday apartment in 2007."

"The 46-year-old former GP told a court she believed Amaral’s book, The Truth of the Lie, had turned the Portuguese people against the couple. "

"Kate also revealed the policeman’s smears had reached the ears of their nine-year-old son who asked her: "Mr Amaral said you hid Madeleine, didn’t he?"

"She was asked previously in the hearing by judge Maria de Melo e Castro about claims she and 45-year-old Gerry dumped Madeleine’s body after she was accidentally killed in their Praia da Luz apartment."

"Kate branded the allegation "far-fetched" and added: "It was about Madeleine being killed and us having moved the body and then storing her in a freezer and then transporting the body in a hire car several weeks later."

"We were so desperate to find Madeleine and I just felt it was destroying our chances."

"Asked how she felt when she first read Amaral’s book, she replied: "I was devastated. It made me feel quite desperate because of injustice I felt towards my daughter and our family." [The book has never been published in English. It is interesting that Kate McCann can read Portuguese ! ]

It looks like the mainstream media did not check their sources.

From Laid Bare:

"Yesterday, 28th April 2015, the media reported that the McCanns had been awarded varying figures from the damages trial they instigated against Goncalo Amaral. We were very sceptical as to whether the news was genuine, or whether it was simply more dirty tricks from team McCann, the like of which we saw on January 21st 2015, when someone rumoured to be Isabel Duarte, the McCann`s lawyer, told the Lusa News Agency that the McCann`s had won the trial against Goncalo."

"What took us all by surprise yesterday, was that the press were getting these stories before Goncalo`s legal team were. This just didn`t make sense at all, the verdict was always supposed to be sent to both parties in writing."

"So why didn`t Goncalo`s team have the documentation?"

"The answer to that is quite astonishing. Isabel Duarte got her hands on the document before it passed through Citius, the judicial network, she then passed it on to several journalists."

Possible setback for Kate and Gerry McCann

Goncalo Amaral signing copies of his book.
Gonçalo Amaral
"Kate and Gerry McCann seemed to suffer a setback this week in suing former detective Gonçalo Amaral over his controversial book about the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine."

"In Lisbon’s Palace of Justice, Judge Maria Emília Melo e Castro handed lawyers in the civil action a written statement evaluating as proven or not a list of 37 points on which she intends to base her verdict. Neither the McCanns nor Amaral were present."

"Amaral supporters said afterwards that the statement made them feel cautiously optimistic."

"The McCanns are seeking €1.2 million in damages for the severe distress they say has been caused to them by the book, A Verdade da Mentira (‘The Truth of the Lie’), and a subsequent documentary."

"The judge ruled that while statements in the book may have psychologically affected the McCanns, the anguish suffered by the couple over their missing daughter preceded the book’s publication rather than being a consequence of it."

"She pointed out that the book was very largely based on facts in police files. While Amaral put forward the theory that the McCanns had hidden Madeleine’s body and fabricated a story about her abduction, he did not say they had killed their daughter, the judge said."

"In personal statements to the court last July, both Kate and Gerry McCann spoke not only of the great harm they believed had been caused to their family by allegations in the book, but that the allegations had hampered the search for Madeleine."

"The judge said Wednesday it had not been proved that the Polícia Judiciária stopped collecting information and investigating the disappearance because of the book’s contents."

The true story of Madeleine McCann

"Richard D Hall of www.richplanet.tv produced a series of videos about the ‘complete mystery’ and blames the mainstream media among other culprits. He confirms The Truth of the Lie by Goncalo Amaral, who claims that Madeleine had died in the appartment."

"By analysing contradictions and changes of the McCann story and confirming the results of the sniffer dogs, he prepares the viewer for a whole set of information that is seriously diverging from all mainstream media versions, illustrating a plot ‘behind the scenes’ to feed stories to the mainstream media."

Here are the links for the four videos with the conclusion that if the truth were to come out in a trial, the State would have to fall:
