Learning in the affective domain

President Obama has named James Comer as one of 15 appointees to the Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence. Comer has said that he would stress to the committee the central importance of child development in helping disadvantaged minority kids succeed:

"You know the purpose of the school is not just to raise test scores, or to give children academic learning. The purpose of the school is to give children an experience that will help them grow and develop in ways that they can be successful, in school and as successful adults. They have to grow in a way that they can take care of themselves, get an education, take care of a family, be responsible citizens of the society and of their community. Now you don`t get that simply by raising test scores."

"Our program focuses on the socially interactive aspects of development so that children learn how to manage themselves in a whole variety of situations, and become responsible for managing themselves in a constructive respectful way. "

"Meanwhile, he said, the national school reform movement has moved away from the key findings he has spent his life promoting."

"That’s a mistake," Comer said. "The modern school reform movement exhibits an absence of understanding of brain growth and maturation, — of the social, emotional, moral, ethical and linguistic development of children."

"The `gimmicks and tactics` of modern-day school reform `don’t go after the fundamental need of children,` he said."

"A person’s `executive function,` the part of the brain that gives us self-control and helps us stick with a task to its completion, doesn’t fully develop until we reach our 20s," Comer said. "That means schools need to focus on continual development from before birth to maturity."

"The school reformers have missed that entirely," Comer said.

Anita Hoge has written an open letter to Secretary Duncan, the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Assessment Governing Board concerning non-cognitive testing in American schools.
The Comer "Pathway Method" implies that "magic circle" and other psychological techniques will begin once again, just like in the 70's and 80's. President Obama and James Comer know that parents do not want the school to delve into the social, emotional, moral, and the ethical development of their children. (affective domain)
Will "Promoting Grit, Tenacity, and Perseverance: Critical Factors for Success in the 21st Century" be the design for a diabolical scheme for people control through interpersonal skills and intrapersonal skills? Parents reject this idea and reject this trajectory.

Anita Hoge filed a federal complaint about testing in the affective domain in schools in Pennsylvania. . In April 1990 her complaint was resolved and questions in the affective domain were withdrawn from school tests. Regardless, non-cognitive testing in schools has reappeared despite privacy issues, concerns about data capture and questions about its legality.
