NLP in the adoption and fostering business

St Andrew's Children's Society is a voluntary adoption and foster care agency with bases in Edinburgh and Aberdeen. They provide adoption services in the East of Scotland from the English border to the Moray Firth.

Like many other voluntary agencies, funds are obtained through grants, donations and legacies; and by holding conferences and training sessions. (Adopters pay thirty five pounds, social workers and professionals sixty five pounds.)

The next Wellbeing & Brain Development Training Day will be hosted by the society on 25th March 2015 and one of the presenters will be Karen Beveridge.  Karen runs two successful businesses, Kids NLP Scotland and Kb-Insights.  Among her many accomplishments Karen has completed her Master Practitioner in neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) with Richard Bandler approved brain training.

If that sounds impressive, maybe it shouldn`t.

Richard Bandler is co-founder of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), an alternative to traditional psychotherapy, which aims to quickly fix life`s problems by re-programming the brain. Since its invention in Santa Cruz California in the 1970s, NLP has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry. It is big business in the UK too where there are some 30,000 qualified practitioners and students can pay up to ten thousand pounds for a three day course.

Bandler`s critics have accused him of everything from running a cult, to brainwashing his clients. Controversial NLP techniques include `mirroring` and `pacing` (i.e. matching the way someone else communicates) to get `what you want from them.`

"One can't imagine it helped his case when, in 1988, Bandler was charged with the murder of a woman – Corine Christensen, a prostitute and NLP student – shot dead in the face with Bandler's gun, while only he and a friend, allegedly his cocaine dealer, were present. The publicity surrounding the case painted him as a nasty piece of work."
"What pisses me off," he says, is that none of this has anything to do with any of the good work I've done." Bandler says he was set up for the murder and acquitted accordingly.

As NLP4Kids have said: "The great thing about NLP4Kids is that teaching kids NLP is only a part of the work they are involved in. Another big part is teaching adults to set up a business out of teaching kids NLP."

You can see how the children`s industry expands in the adoption and fostering field. Create traumatised children by separating them from their families and then provide the privatised training and counselling to treat them - and never worry too much about the validity and reliability of the programmes.
